Mid-September I spent 5 days in the East of Rwanda at Lake Muhazi (2 nights) and up in Nyagatare (1 night). Then down in Kibungo for 2 nights. All for birding and recce for the Rwanda Bird Atlas.
Sky Blue Hotel in Nyagatare now only have rooms in the new section ranging from FRw 15,000, 25,000 to 30,000. I stayed in one for 15,000 which had a 3/4 bed and small bathroom which was fine. The day after I drove out west along some very good dirt roads (up to about 3km from the western border with Uganda). This whole NE area has some great potential for birding and I’ll definitely be going back to explore the ex-Akagera areas which seem to mostly still have good acacia in addition to all the Akagera River papyrus beds.
Kibungo down to Rusumo had some good birds as well although I wasn’t able to do birding (especially nearer Rusumo) un-harrassed like in the NE. Also great birding potential here with reasonably easy access to the papyrus swamps.
With a mate I did the drive from Kabarondo to Akagera Lodge for the day with the bridge at Rwinkavu coming out tops Again for birding. Amazing little spot this.
I’m finishing up with a detailed trip report which I’ll send you once it’s done. ‘Patches’ out of the trip will be going onto my Rwanda birding blog – some bits and bobs posted already.
