Steve Venton, Director of Kingfisher Journeys, writes:
I recently established Kingfisher Journeys, which offers travellers a range of kayaking adventures on Lake Kivu, departing from Gisenyi and Kibuye, and allows them to explore the impressive lakeshore scenery, to discover birds and wildlife, to see traditional fishing boats in use, and to interact with local communities.
With plans to expand all over Rwanda, we already offer:
- Half-day canoeing on a gentle river through the thousand hills around Musanze, a short excursion designed to fit into a busy itinerary before or after visiting the gorillas. This costs US$35 pp from Musanze. Departure 08:30 and 14:00 each day, with 3 hours on the water.
- a half-day kayaking trip on Lake Kivu past the hot springs. This costs US$60 pp from Gisenyi and Kibuye. Departure 07:30 and 11:00 in the wet season, or 14:00 in the dry season each day, 3 hours on the water.
- One, two or four-day trips from Gisenyi and Kibuye, starting at US$90 pp, and departing at 07:30 with about 5 to 7 hours on the water – and a trip to see the singing fishermen at sunset included in the price.
Big discounts are offered to students, volunteers, residents and travellers staying at partner hotels and hostels.
